Bald Eagle Dies at Suburban Chicago Wildlife Center

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (AP)–A bald eagle that died this week at a wildlife center in suburban Chicago had recovered last year from a gunshot wound.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports it’s likely the eagle died from an unknown illness.

The male bird was found Tuesday and died before morning the next day.

Officials at Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn first thought the eagle had been hit by a car, but it didn’t have broken bones. It will be tested for West Nile virus.

The eagle was tagged with a band from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which identified it as a bird that had recovered from a gunshot wound last year. In that case, the eagle was released from a center run by the DuPage County Forest Preserve District.
