Dwight Fire Chief Hopes to Double On-Call Firefighting Crew

DWIGHT, Ill. (AP) — The fire protection district in Dwight has been awarded a federal grant that will allow its firefighting staff to double within four years.

Dwight Fire Chief Paul Johnson tells The (Kankakee) Daily Journal that the grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security totals more than $352,000. It will fund a recruitment and retention coordinator, advertising, fitness equipment, on-call payroll, training and college tuition reimbursement. The money also will cover firefighting gear for new firefighters.

The district now has 25 on-call firefighters working weekdays, but only a few are available during normal working hours. Johnson hopes to build the staff to 50 paid on-call firefighters.

The village of Dwight is located about 65 miles southwest of Chicago.
