Chicago Aldermen Demand Firing of Police Superintendent

CHICAGO (AP) — A group of Chicago aldermen are demanding that the city’s police superintendent resign, pointing to the street violence plaguing the city.

The aldermen, most of them African-American, contended Monday that Superintendent Garry McCarthy has had five years to reduce the violence and hasn’t done so.

Alderman Roderick Sawyer says residents are fed up with violence, drugs and other crimes on their streets and he says McCarthy hasn’t kept the promises he’s made.

In a statement, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he shares the aldermen’s concerns, but “supports the work and commitment” of McCarthy.

The demand by the aldermen comes after an especially violent September, during which on two weekends more than 100 people were shot. Overall, the city has a seen a 21 percent increase in murders, a trend seen nationally.
