Police Superintendent to Face Alderman Demanding His Firing

CHICAGO (AP) — One day after a group of Chicago alderman demanded his firing, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy is expected to appear before some of the same alderman during a budget hearing.

McCarthy is expected to talk Tuesday about the Chicago Police Department’s financial needs for the 2016 fiscal year.

The group of aldermen, most African-American, on Monday pointed to the street violence plaguing the city for demanding McCarthy’s firing. They contended that McCarthy has had plenty of time to reduce the violence and hasn’t done so.

The demand by the aldermen comes as the city records a 21 percent increase in murders, a trend seen nationally.

In a statement, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he shares the aldermen’s concerns, but “supports the work and commitment” of McCarthy.
