Shimmin, Thomas WThomas W. Shimmin, 72, of Little York, IL died at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Monmouth Nursing Home.

He was born February 21, 1943 in Monmouth, IL the son of Lawrence R. and Mathilda (Lovdahl) Shimmin.  Thomas was raised and educated near Cameron, graduating from Warren High School in 1961.  Following his graduation Thomas enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1962 to 1966. While in the Navy he worked most of the time at the Pentagon.

 

Thomas married Linda M. Barman in Little York on November 5, 1977 and she survives.

 

He worked at Husky Built in Monmouth making Pole Buildings.  He later worked at Monmouth Grain and Dryer for 18 years delivering feed and working the dryer.  Most recently he worked 10 years for Tri-Oak Foods in Oakville, IA as a truck driver before retiring in 2005.

 

Thomas was a member of the Fairview Center United Methodist Church.  He played fast pitch softball for many local teams over several years.  He also enjoyed bowling and was active in many bowling leagues in the area.  He loved playing with  his grandchildren and his cat “Sunshine” along with being an avid Chicago Bears and Atlanta Braves fan.

 

Survivors include his wife, Linda Shimmin of Little York; children, Christy Shimmin of Galesburg, Tyler (Melody) Shimmin of Burlington, IA, Amber (Lucky Powers) of Galesburg and Spencer Shimmin of Little York; his grandchildren, Samantha, Brittany, Torie, Alex, Tyler, Shelby, Ava, Angelica and November; 5 great grandchildren; his mother, Mathilda Shimmin of Monmouth; 1 sister, Susan (Jerry) Clark of Keokuk, IA and sister in law, Velda Shimmin of Monmouth.

 

He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Donald Shimmin.

 

Memorial services with Military Honors will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2015 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. A private family burial will take place in Little York Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call Wednesday, October 7th at the funeral home where his family will be present from 5:00-7:00 p.m.  A memorial fund has been established to be designated at a later date.
