Karen Lewis to Seek Another Term as Teachers Union Head

CHICAGO (AP) — A spokesman says the president of the Chicago Teachers Union will seek re-election next year.

Karen Lewis has been battling cancer for about year. However, a union spokesman said Tuesday the 62-year-old Lewis will seek another term in May.

Lewis has been the union’s president since defeating incumbent Marilyn Stewart in 2010.

Under her leadership, the 30,000-member union went on seven-day strike in September 2012 over wages and benefits.

Lewis won a second, three-year term as union president in May 2013. She was considering a run for Chicago mayor when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last year.
