Chicago Cab Driver Group Calls for 24-hour Strike

CHICAGO (AP) — Hailing a Chicago cab might be a little harder Thursday.

One of the city’s taxi associations has called for a 24-hour strike beginning at 6 a.m. to protest Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2016 budget proposal.

The mayor proposes increasing both cab fares and fees on companies that allow people to use smartphones to hail private vehicles. But the plan would give those companies access to Chicago’s two airports and the McCormick Place convention center.

The United Taxi Drivers Community Council complains the fare increase wouldn’t make up for money lost competing in those areas.

The council represents about 700 of the city’s 12,000 cab drivers. The success of any strike would depend on other groups joining in.

Chicago’s airports warned travelers cabs could be scarce and suggested they use public transit.
