Illinois recognizes 125 Years of the Daughters of the American Revolution

Daughters of the American RevolutionThe National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating its 125th anniversary on Sunday.

In a state proclamation, Governor Bruce Rauner recognized the organization and the “10 million hours of service to America” it has provided.

For those not familiar with DAR, it is a nation-wide service organization of more than 177,000 women who have traced their heritage back to the American Revolution.

Locally, the Rebecca Parke Chapter of DAR gives an annual Good Citizen Award to one senior in each area high school while supporting efforts in conservation, women’s health and genealogy.

Last year the Galesburg chapter did landscaping work around the Mother Bickerdyke statue outside the Knox County Courthouse.

Galesburg Chapter President Pam Johnson tells WGIL the local group is joining the national DAR in celebrating 125 years Sunday at the Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg.

“We are celebrating it by servicing,” Johnson says. “Because its a Sunday, we like to have our members go to church, serve in our church. We’re in a choir; I’m in a bell choir. We’re doing anything we can to help the community or help our church.”

The local DAR chapter meets on the third Saturday of each month at Bethel Baptist.

The next big local DAR event is on April 9th of next year when the 70-member chapter will honor veterans of the Vietnam War.
