Former Dwight Prison to Become Fire-Training Facility

DWIGHT, Ill. (AP) — The former women’s prison in Dwight will become a fire-training facility.

The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reports the Dwight Fire Protection District signed a five-year agreement with the state to use several parts of the campus for training.

Officials say there is no other place in Livingston County where fire and rescue workers can get realistic instruction.

Local fire officials say they’ve worked with fire academies around the state. The Romeoville Fire Academy has agreed to develop a site at Dwight and offer courses that meet state and national requirements.

Courses will be tailored to volunteer firefighters’ schedules and conducted on evenings and weekends. They will begin early next year.

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn ordered the Dwight prison closed in 2013 to save money.
