Jesse Jackson Calls for Conference on Gun Violence

CHICAGO (AP) — Civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson is calling for a White House conference on gun violence to deal with an issue that is plaguing some U.S. cities.

Jackson on Friday noted President Barack Obama’s visit to Oregon to console the families of nine victims of a shooting on a college campus. Jackson said every weekend the city of Chicago has gun violence equal to last week’s deadly shooting in Roseburg. The July 4 weekend saw 48 people shot in Chicago.

The head of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition said people can’t walk in parks or sit on their porches, adding “this is an emergency.”

Jackson said a conference will have to come up with solutions to the gun violence not only plaguing Chicago, but also cities like Baltimore, Milwaukee and Detroit.
