Man Charged in Shooting Death of Chicago Police Employee

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a longtime civilian police employee while the victim was unloading groceries from his car.

Chicago police say 18-year-old William Cochran was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated in the shooting death of 59-year-old John “Buck” Buckner on Sept. 16. Judge Laura Sullivan on Friday ordered Cochran held in lieu of $1 million bond.

At the time of the shooting authorities said three males rode by on bicycles and opened fire along the block.

Authorities say Buckner and a 41-year-old man who was also wounded were not the intended targets.

Prosecutors say three witnesses identified Cochran in a photo array and a fourth identified him in a lineup.

Deputy Chief Eugene Roy says two other suspects are being sought.
