KCHD Sticking To Department Budget

Knox County Health DepartmentIllinois’ budget woes continue to effect agencies state wide, and in Knox County many of those agencies are on the list.

Last week, the County Finance Committee proposed an estimated $55,000 in cuts to the County’s Health Department.

Those cuts, as well as cuts to various other departments, have been proposed to deal with a looming county deficit.

In a press release, KCHD Administrator Michele Fishburn says, “these are trying times for Knox County and the State of Illinois, and even more trying for the Illinois public health system overall.”

Fishburn is expected to meet with the Finance Committee tomorrow alongside representatives from the State’s Attorney’s office to hash out details surrounding submitted department budgets.

KCHD seems to be sticking to the budget they passed along to the committee. The department approved a budget last month that consisted of $1.3 Million in grant funds, which Fishburn says started at $595,000 in 2010.

The health department admin adds that she “expects questions and welcomes them.” Fishburn says she is “confident the Health Department will pass a solid and fiscally sound balanced budget to the board for approval.”

With the proposed cuts, the county still faces a roughly $788,000 deficit in its general fund, as the balancing act continues.
