Illinois Budget Impasse Continues into October

Don MoffittIt’s been four months now since Illinois had a spending plan in place.

State Representative Don Moffitt says $4 billion continues to keep lawmakers apart, as House Dems have proposed a $36 billion budget with $32 billion in expected revenue.

House Speaker Mike Madigan and Governor Bruce Rauner differ over tax increases to offset the difference. The Governor wants business reforms before entertaining that notion.

Moffitt says with a super majority in the House and Senate, the Madigan backed ticket could be voted through without Rauner’s approval.

The Gilson Republican tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL that he thinks it hasn’t happened because some are on the fence.

“The Speaker is apparently unwilling to put all of those votes on it, or is convinced he cannot come up with them,” says Moffitt. “There are several members of the Democrat majority that have indicated their hesitancy to vote for a tax increase, some are just saying put it on there and we’ll vote for it. I’m not sure they can get 71 (votes.) Maybe if they could they would have by now.”

Legislators are only scheduled to meet two more times this year.

However, Madigan or Rauner could call additional sessions if an agreement comes to the table.
