JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the death of a 1-year-old Joliet girl.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Melanie Massey died Friday night at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Department of Children and Family Services spokeswoman Veronica Resa said Monday that the agency is investigating the girl’s father and a caretaker for possible abuse and neglect. She said the agency has had no prior contact with the child’s family prior to her death.

The (Joliet) Herald-News reports that the cause and manner of the girl’s death are still under investigation.

Cook County Medical Examiner spokesman Frank Shuftan says an autopsy performed Saturday was inconclusive.
