Benson, Cavanaugh Announce Candidacy for Ninth Circuit Judgeships

Bensonpic Two justices in the Ninth Judicial Circuit announced today that they plan to run for a pair of Circuit Judge vacancies.

Associate Judge Heidi Benson of Macomb and Associate Judge Ray Cavanaugh of Gladstone are the two candidates.

Benson has served as Associate Judge since 2011. Prior to that, she spent time working in private practice, and as a contract public defender among other roles.

Cavanaugh has been in the position since 2010 and has served more than 25 years in the Ninth Circuit alone. He has worked as the Assistant State’s Attorney and public defender in Warren County, and has also served as the State’s Attorney in Henderson County.

The pair will now join Knox County Chief Public Defender Dave Hansen in the race. Hansen announced a petition last month to be elected to former Chief Judge James B. Stewart’s position. Stewart and former Justice Steven Bordner retired earlier this year, leaving the vacancies.cavanaughpic

The three candidates are running for the general election next year, but a slew of candidates from Galesburg and one from Dahinda applied in August for appointment to fill out the remainder of the two terms. Both appointments have yet to be announced.
