City contemplates solution to downtown parking issue

parking 2A number of downtown business owners and concerned citizens are continuing to call for parking changes on parts of Main, Seminary, and Cherry Streets.

Members of the Galesburg City Council and the City Administration held a meeting last night for the public to voice its opinions.

Constituents are asking for public parking spots in front of store fronts to be left open for patrons, but questions of enforcement have been raised.

The city originally denied a petition for two-hour parking, but according to opinions given last night, that doesn’t necessarily seem to be the only option that would satisfy citizens.

“Courtesy” signage, additional parking lots, information about existing lots, marked spaces on Main and Seminary, and allotted parking times for customers only, were just some of the thoughts raised last night.

The Chamber of Commerce issued a survey to garner perspective earlier this week. Last night, City Engineer Wayne Carl passed out a survey from the city to gauge reactions as well. Carl tells WGIL, that officials will be compiling that  information.

“We’ll use the Chamber’s survey a little bit–they had a couple of questions and we’ll just gauge by what I heard tonight,” says Carl. “We’ll also keep soliciting input, if anybody else didn’t make it to the meeting and wants input. I want to hear from everyone before we make a decision to help the downtown.”parking 1

Although he gave no indication as to what the solution might be, Carl says after a meeting of the Traffic Advisory Committee, a proposal will be drafted for council to consider next month.
