Knox Student hit at cross walk, Police call for “courtesy and education”

knox student hit(UPDATED at 9:36 a.m. 10/15/15) An 18-year-old female student at Knox College was struck by a Silver Honda C-RV this evening while crossing a designated crosswalk near the campus.

Authorities responded to the intersection of South and West Streets near Knox’s Science-Mathematics Center at 5:30 p.m.

According to Galesburg Police, the driver of the vehicle was headed Eastbound on South street when the student entered the cross walk. She was transported from the scene by the Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A police official who asked not to be named told WGIL that accidents near the crosswalk are happening far too frequently. The individual says that “both pedestrians and drivers need to show common courtesy to each other and be aware of signs.”

Those signs telling drivers to stop when pedestrians are present were installed in 2012, following the death of fellow Knox Student Tundun Lawani who was hit by a drunk driver just a block away from today’s incident.

The officer added that he hopes all will seek out education about the crossings. An updated report from Police Chief David Christensen indicated that the driver was charged with failure to yield to pedestrian right of way.
