Monmouth-Roseville considers tax increase

Monmouth-Roseville School DistrictThe District 238 Board of Education met yesterday to discuss what Governor Bruce Rauner’s proposed property tax limitation law could mean for Monmouth-Roseville schools.

Like the Galesburg School Board, Monmouth-Roseville is considering a hike to its tax levy to offset complications from the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, if it is passed.

District 238 Superintendent Ed Fletcher tells WGIL his district isn’t the only one weighing its options.

“It’s a very big discussion for lots of boards,” Fletcher says. “School boards that are facing this as part of Governor Rauner’s turn around agenda and its a difficult decision because no laws have been passed yet regarding PTELL but at the same time if something does happen and the board has not looked at their current levies and the aggregate extension base and debt service extension base, it could have long lasting effects on the school district.”

Fletcher says the district’s finance committee will bring a tentative levy to the school board in November ahead of a vote in December.

Also discussed during last night’s meeting was a tuition waiver renewal.

The waiver allows children of district employees who live outside the district to attend Monmouth-Roseville schools without paying about $6,800 in tuition.
