Childcare providers rally against government cuts

Protest raunerNearly a dozen parents, children and childcare providers gathered outside Representative Don Moffitt’s Galesburg office today urging lawmakers to take action against cuts to the Child Care Assistance Program.

The rally stems from an upcoming Senate Bill addressing Governor Bruce Rauner’s recent changes to childcare eligibility and subsidies to families applying for child care assistance.

Galesburg rally participant Leslie Moore tells WGIL she has a daughter involved in local childcare whose livelihood could be on the line if new legislation does not undo Rauner’s changes.

“I’m out here today because Governor Rauner is holding our childcare providers and our kids hostage, our working parents — low wage working parents.” Moore says. “He’s sending a clear message that he doesn’t really think they need to work. And they’re goign back an welfare and it’s happening in Galesburg at a rapid rate.”

Rally organizer Evette Cagle, who made the trip to Galesburg from Peoria, says the rallies and protests have not accomplished much.

“By looking at what has happened over the last few months we don’t feel like there’s been any progress,” Cagle says.

The rally ran from 11 a.m. to just after noon today.
