City to replace $12,000 alarm system

Galesburg-city-signFor the past couple years, an alarm control panel that monitors Galesburg City Hall and the Public Safety Building has been giving off error readings, fails to accurately time-stamp signals and regularly malfunctions.

In the last 30 days, false alarms were added to the devices list of bugs. That’s according to Parks and Recreation Director Larry Cox, who says the control panel has been in the building since its construction in 1991.

The nearly 25-year-old technology is used for monitoring fire alarms and sensors in the structure.
Cox tells WGIL it’s time to replace the device.

“It’s not really a safety issue, but it is a concern when the fire alarm goes off and of course, we have to track it down immediately or you have to evacuate the building and we don’t want to do that for false alarms,” says Cox.

No timeframe has been nailed down for when the replacement panel could be installed.

“I’m not sure if there is any equipment that has to be ordered and shipped, but we want to get it installed just as soon as we can.”

Replacing the device will cost about $12,000. Because the piece of city equipment carries a price tag greater than $5,000, the purchase has to be approved by the city council.

Cox says he expects the council to approve the request during today’s meeting, adding that the decision is ultimately up to them.
