Relative hiring policy atop council agenda

galesburgAn anti-nepotism clause in question by various aldermen will be brought to the table again tonight when the Galesburg City Council meets.

Current policy states that only one person per family will be employed by the City in a department.

The policy, that was originally questioned by a citizen, is up for debate again tonight, specifically regarding modifications to the city’s fire and police departments.

Two weeks ago, Aldermen Angela Bastian, Wayne Dennis and Corine Anderson all called for modifications for either fire or police, while aldermen Russell Flemming and Wayne Allen felt current policy put in place by city administration was sufficient.

Council will be presented a number of options to choose from, including limitations for family of city officials, and supervision restrictions.

According to council documents, City Manager Todd Thompson has recommended no change to the current policy.

Meanwhile, a market study to gauge interest in developing an event center will likely be voted upon tonight. The old National Guard Armory is being targeted for that center, which would include the center as well as a hotel. The proposed study has a price tag of $28,000 and would take six weeks to complete.
