Knoxville approves three TIF grants

Knoxville signThe Knoxville City Council last night approved several Tax Increment Financing grants for downtown businesses.

Among the approvals was a $10,000 facade grant to redo the outside of Market Street Mall located just north of Knoxville City Hall.

Ward Two Alderman Dennis Maurer, who is sitting in as mayor pro tem while Mayor-elect Bob Johnson recovers from an illness, tells WGIL passersby won’t notice any changes once construction on the Market Street building is complete.

“That’s going to help him re-skin the building,” Maurer says. “The material that was up there before was put up 20-30 years ago was just old Masonite painted over with wooden batten to kind of hold it in place. That’s being replaced with fiber glass material that’ll be much more weather resistant and pressure treated timbers for the battens. So, the appearance of the building is not really not going to change, it’s just the material that covers it.”

Market Street Mall owner Fred Johnson, who present during last night’s council meeting, said he intended to request funds through the city’s TIF grant for building repair as well.

Additionally, about $2,370 in TIF money was approved to Western Illinois Realty and $2,500 to Sparkies Auto & Custom.
