Morning Fire Scorches Locust Street Home

locust fireBlack walls and extensive smoke damage has left the interior of a Locust Street home in bad shape following a morning fire.

That’s according to Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins, who says a family of five, including one person sleeping on the top floor, escaped flames that barreled through all three-stories of the 1920’s era residence.

Authorities responded to 683 Locust Street shortly after 7 a.m. this morning to extinguish the blaze.

Simkins says the fire started in a first floor closet, although no cause has been officially confirmed at this time. A man was treated with oxygen at the scene for excessive smoke inhalation, however, his injuries are not life threatening.

Battalion Chief Chip Timmons adds that firefighters “knocked down flames” within ten minutes of arrival. Locust, Knox and Cooper Streets were all blocked off, but have re-opened at this time.

GFD was assisted by the Galesburg Police Department, Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service, and the American Red Cross at the scene.
