Annie’s Cafe to join Henderson Street video gambling belt

City hall gburgThe city of Galesburg has issued five licenses for businesses to operate as video gaming parlors. With the exception of Annie’s Cafe, currently located on South Seminary Street, all are located blocks away from each other on Henderson Street.Following last night’s 5-1 approval by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Annie’s will be joining the Henderson Street gambling belt.

The commission approved 1348 N. Henderson Street for a special use permit as an arcade and bar.

Commissioner Leigh Nygard was the lone vote against, citing concerns that elderly women, the parlors’ primary clientele may become addicted to the gambling devices.

After the meeting, Director of Community Development Roy Parkin told WGIL the collection of gambling parlors hasn’t been a problem.

“Moving it off of Seminary Street over there, that’s really a determination that the owner has to make on whether they feel they can do a better job in another location,” Parkin said. “And we’ve not noticed any impacts to the neighboring properties up there, so as I said to the Development Review Committee, we supported it.”

Also approved last night was a change to Galesburg’s development ordinance covering landscape regulation.

In a 4-2 vote, the commission approved eliminating current landscape controls and replacing them with a simplified system that would require new businesses to submit a sketch of their planned landscaping along with their proposals.
