Hanlon leaving a legacy

john hanlonGalesburg’s outgoing legal counsel has served under eight Mayors and six City Managers since stepping into the role back in 1978.

City Attorney and Corporation Counsel John Hanlon will officially retire at the end of the month.

City Council members honored the longtime attorney earlier this week with a reception, prior to the regularly scheduled meeting.

Mayor John Pritchard tells WGIL, that Hanlon will be missed.

“I’ve known John for many, many years and it’s always been a pleasure to work with him,” says Pritchard. “I love his good sense of humor, and his whit. I think his calm demeanor has always been a positive influence on past city council’s and this one.”

Hanlon says he’s grateful for the staff he’s worked with over the years. He adds that leaving hasn’t quite set in yet.

“It seems a little weird that my time is coming to an end.” “I’m excited about it, but it doesn’t seem quite real yet–it will– but right now it doesn’t.”

The longtime counsel says he “plans to spend time with the grandkids and ride his bicycle” upon retirement on October 31st.

Bradley Nolden, a private attorney coming from Morris, was announced as Hanlon’s replacement two weeks ago. He begins in Galesburg on November 2nd.
