Runaway Plane Causes $5,000 in Damages at Galesburg Airport

galesburgpolicelogoThe owner of a small prop plane housed at the Galesburg Municipal Airport had an accident last night, when his plane got away from him, crashed into a hangar, and in turn damaged another plane.

Galesburg Police responded to 307 Stearman Drive yesterday at 5:11 p.m. to investigate the damages.

20-year-old Brian Vallero of Galesburg was reportedly preparing his Piper Cub J3 for storage on a runway. He started the aircraft with a handheld prop starter and the plane rolled away from him, veering right toward a group of hangars.

According to police reports, the plane then crashed into a hangar door, denting it and damaging a red Challenger Light Sport aircraft.

Overall, that crash incurred $5,000 in damages. The Challenger had $2,500 in damages to the right wing, support beam, and cockpit windows. The Cub saw $2,500 in damage to both wings and its windshield and the hangar door had $1,000 in damages from the large dent that was made.

Both Vallero and the owner of the Challenger did have insurance on their aircraft. No charges were filed and no injuries occurred.
