Pond Stocking Benefits Recreation

soil and waterTomorrow is the last day area pond owners can order fish for restocking through the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District.

According to KCSWCD Resource Conservationist Kara Downin, the sale this Fall is one of two that takes place every year.

Channel catfish, large mouth bass, minnow, blue gill and a number of other fish will be distributed.

Downin tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL, that re-stocking area ponds is done for a number of reasons.

“A lot of time, it’s for recreational use,” Downin says. “There are also ponds that are a water source for cattle a lot or if the land owner them self doesn’t enjoy fishing, they have friends or family who would enjoy coming out.”

Downin adds that pond owners do need to be wary when Winter hits.

“We’ve had cases where we’ve had winter fish kills because there was prolonged snow cover. If you’re able to get out to your pond and at least uncover a portion of it from the snow cover to let some sunlight in, that really helps the life of your pond.”

Fish will be available for pickup at the USDA office on October 30th beginning at 10:30 a.m. Those interested should bring containers to hold bagged fish upright.
