One injured in Michigan Avenue wreck

galesburgpolicelogoA crash that sent one vehicle into a power pole, hospitalized a driver and involved another vehicle that contained a propane tank could have ended much worse, police say.

Officers responded just before 5 p.m. today to Adams Street and Michigan Avenue where a ’96 Buick sedan driven by 25-year-old Miranda Struder rested against an electrical pole.

The Monmouth woman was stopped at a stop sign going westbound on Adams when she pulled into the intersection.

A 2014 Chevrolet van driven by 45-year-old Phillip Alfaro was traveling south on Michigan when Struder’s car struck his driver’s side.

Alfaro did not have a stop sign. He was pinned inside his vehicle, but was able to free himself from the wreckage.

The van was still drivable, however, Struder’s Buick sustained heavy damage to its front end and had to be towed from the scene.

Police say the van contained a propane tank that was not breached.

Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service transported Alfaro to Cottage Hospital for treatment of back, neck and knee pain.

Struder, who was unharmed, was ticketed for failure to yield.

Both drivers — the sole occupants of their respective vehicles — were wearing seatbelts and had no signs of impairment. Neither vehicle’s airbags deployed.

Ameren responded to asses damage to the electrical pole, finding no serious problems.
