Stephen Mathers returns to fill judge vacancy

JudgeMathersTwice-retired Judge Stephen Mathers is returning to the bench next month for another year-long stint in 9th Judicial Circuit Court.

Mathers served 30 years as circuit judge from the time he was elected in 1980 through his first retirement in 2010.

He was asked back to fill a vacancy in 2013 that lasted until the spot was filled by election in 2014.

Much like his 2013 return, Mathers will be assigned to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court until December of 2016 when his spot will again be filled by election.

The returning judge was not on a recently compiled list of applicants interested in filling the circuit’s two openings for judge.

Mathers says it was am “honor to be asked” back, adding that he did not seek the assignment.

Speaking on his extensive experience as judge, he says his “old-school” values and sensibilities were formed “many decades ago.”

He begins November 16th.
