Man gets 17-year prison sentence in murder-for-hire scheme

CHICAGO (AP) — A 17-year prison sentence has been handed a Chicago man for hatching a murder-for-hire scheme targeting a witness against his son.

Euripides Caguana was convicted in May for trying to hire a former neighbor to kill two men scheduled to testify against his son, 21-year-old Travis Caguana.

Valentine alerted authorities in October 2013 of the plot and worked undercover to recording meetings with the elder Caguana.

During one meeting with Jimmy Valentine, the 61-year-old Caguana paid $500 for the purchase of a gun and offered $7,500 to have the two witnesses killed. The murders were never carried out.

At the time, Travis Caguana, who is awaiting trial, was about to be tried in the June 2011 gang-related slaying of Dante Smallwood. The 18-year-old Smallwood was fatally shot in June 2011.
