GPD calls for safety this Halloween

galesburgpolicelogoThe Galesburg Police force is reminding residents to celebrate at their own risk this Halloween.

As for most major holidays, GPD will enact its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 43 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities recorded on Halloween Night between 2009 and 2013 involved drunk drivers.

During the same time, about 19 percent of pedestrian fatalities involved intoxicated drivers as well.

In a press release, Lieutenant Russ Idle says “if you want to stay safe this Halloween, make a plan to get home without driving if you’re impaired.”

Police are urging those impaired to plan a safe way to get home before the party and to designate a sober driver or friend to walk with.

In the State of Illinois, DUI charges can result in fines as high as $18,000.
