Notre Dame Glee Club graces Galesburg

1025151419a~3In a display of vocal talent, the University of Notre Dame Glee Club yesterday performed a variety of songs ranging from traditional American folk and shanties to spirituals and Eastern European dance music.

The student choir lead the Galesburg First Lutheran Church concert by singing happy birthday to Galesburg Community Chorus Director Tim Pahel.

The Community Chorus had invited the Notre Dame all-men group as this year’s guest choir.

Glee Club Director Dan Stowe tells WGIL he sees music as an educational, character building exercise.

“Dedication to a task, working with others, setting goals and achieving them, all of these kind of basic things that I think we learn tremendous lessons from in music that we can apply as lessons in our daily lives,” says Stowe.

Stowe says a Notre Dame student singer from Monmouth got the choir in touch with concert promoters in Galesburg to make yesterday’s performance possible.

The concert was the Glee Club’s last performance in an eight-stop trip that included destinations in Chicago, Denver, Kansas City, Omaha and other locations.

They tour while the university is on break each fall and spring.

This year marks the group’s 100th year as a campus ensemble.
