Village passes ordinance to more closely monitor gun sales

LYONS, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago suburb of Lyons, sued earlier this year for the alleged weak oversight of gun stores, has a new ordinance that spells out procedures more closely monitor gun sales.

Village Mayor Christopher Getty says the ordinance approved Tuesday will “help prevent straw buyers from purchasing guns that end up in the hands of criminals.” Getty says the village will be working in partnership with the Cook County sheriff’s department.

The ordinance is a response to a lawsuit filed in July alleging Lyons is responsible for guns sold legally by Midwest Sporting Goods that end up in the hands of criminals.

In addition to Lyons, the lawsuit targeted the suburbs of Riverdale and Lincolnwood.

Plaintiff’s attorney Michael Persoon told the Chicago Tribune the village has been dropped from the lawsuit.
