District 205 Budget Reduction Committee discusses school essentials

1029151903bThe Galesburg School District Budget Reduction Committee met last night for the second time since being reformed under Superintendent Ralph Grimm earlier this month.

Most of the meeting focused on the compilation of two lists made by some members of the committee: one for items that make an ideal school district, and one for “non-negotiables,” or items that the district must offer regardless of financials.

In no particular order, the ideal list included items like “progressive,” “more testing for learning disabilities,” “no Common Core” and “do away with deficit budget.”

Non-negotiables included “state mandated programs and services,” “vocational education programs,” “athletics” and “AP courses.”

Grimm told WGIL the lists where necessary to find what the community felt the district could live without.

“As we look at all of the things that we’ve been studying in terms of possible reductions or efficiencies or whatever internally, then we’ll look at our list against the list of priorities that these folks have suggested for us to see how they compare,” Grimm said. “And if we’re looking at something on our list that might be significant in our minds but is a high priority for this group, then I think we got to go back and look at that.”

The next committee meeting is set for November 12th.
