Knox County Inmate in Critical Condition After Attempted Hanging

knoxcountyjailA Knoxville man who was incarcerated in the Knox County jail is in critical condition and is expected to pass away tomorrow.

Family confirmed that 26-year-old Joey Corbin remains hospitalized at OSF St. Francis Medical Center after an incident that took place Tuesday evening in the man’s jail cell.

Knox County Sheriff Dave Clague says Corbin attempted to hang himself with a bed sheet shortly before authorities found him Tuesday at 7:20 p.m.
Clague tells WGIL, correctional officers responded quickly to the situation.

“We immediately called for help,” says Clague. “Other correctional officers arrived within 20-30 seconds. No signs of life were noted.  After doing CPR, there was a pulse, strained, but he was breathing.”

Jail Administrator Louie Glossip adds that Corbin had been in jail for about two weeks on a failure to appear charge stemming from residential burglary. Court records indicate a long list of charges and jail visits dating back to 2004.

Glossip says the man showed no signs of distress with staff or other inmates.

“To my knowledge, there have been no behavioral issues, any conflicts. I think everyone would probably describe it as business as usual.”

The Illinois State Crime Lab and Crime Scene Investigators were called in to asses the scene. An investigation is on-going.

Edit: Jail Administrator Louie Glossip’s title was original reported as Inspector. The story now reflects Glossip’s correct title. 10/30/2015; 5:20 a.m.
