Downtown parking lot renovations near completion

As long as the weather stays fair, the parking lot at Seminary and Mulberry streets is set to fully reopen this weekend.

That’s according to City Engineer Wayne Carl, who says crews are working to repave and restripe the east side of the Parking Lot D this week.

Carl says the parking lot had been wearing down and was ready for a serious touch up. Work includes widening the lot entrance, adding parking spaces and repaving.

Carl tells WGIL other renovation work includes cosmetic changes.

“It’s just kind of gotten run down over the years,” Carl says. “By providing the landscaping, that’ll kind of freshen it up, as well as some stamped concrete medians that we installed and some new decorative lighting. The lighting that’s there has been there for some time and just needed to be replaced.”

The project was estimated to cost about $771,000. Carl says he expects things to come in just over budget at about $775,000.

City TIF funds are paying for the Lot D renovations. Carl says other lots could use similar touch ups.

“As soon as funding becomes available, we’d like to do similar treatments to some of the other parking lots,” Carl says, “but nothing is formal yet because there is no funding.”

Other lots are not located in TIF districts and are therefor not eligible for TIF funding.
