Group to send checks to victims of Coal City tornado

COAL CITY, Ill. (AP) — A committee in charge of distributing money to victims of last June’s tornado in Coal City says it will start sending out checks this month.

The (Joliet) Herald-News reports that The Long Term Recovery Committee had hoped to send checks out in October. But organizers say it took longer than expected to register families and write more than 500 checks.

Devan Gagliardo of the Community Foundation of Grundy County says that about $208,000 will be sent to the registered families in the initial disbursement over the next few weeks.

The powerful June 22 tornado damaged more than 800 properties but Gagliardo says some residents did not register for assistance.
