Knoxville considers revamped liquor licenses

A conversation about liquor licenses that started last month continued during last night’s Knoxville City Council meeting.

City Clerk Charlie Gruner says the council discussed ordinance changes that could allow beer gardens outside local establishments.

“There have been some proposals for having the ability to serve liquor out of doors,” Gruner says. “There are also some state regulations that are involved, so its not as easy as just having City Council make a change.”

Additionally, the council is looking into allowing the consumption of alcohol outdoors during special events.

Gruner says City Attorney Rob McCoy will draft a proposal for the November 16th board meeting.

Another topic discussed during last night’s meeting was a building permit violation at the Lifeline to Africa property on North Hebard Street.

As Gruner explained, the charity organization has been building a structure that is not in line with permit laws.

“They were putting up a greenhouse without a building permit,” Gruner says, “and the building itself in violation, the fact that there’s no building permit is in violation as well. So we’re asking them to stop work on that and take it down.”

Gruner says McCoy will be working with Lifeline to Africa regarding the violations.
