Drive 2A Cure donates to Muscular Dystrophy Association

This weekend, the Yemm Auto Group and the dealership’s Guest Relations Manager Sara Yemm are raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Drive 2A Cure kickoff party is set for tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Yemm Auto Group, 2195 North Henderson Street.

Sara says the event will have “activities for all ages,” including face painting and bounce houses for the kids and free food, music and raffles.

All proceeds go to the Central Illinois MDA, an organization Sara tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL is especially important to her.

“Limb girdle muscular dystrophy was what I was diagnosed with about 10 years ago,” Sara says. “So, it affects the proximal muscles of the body, those closest to the center. It affects people by — walking becomes difficult, standing, raising your arms. Definitely unexpected falls are common.”

Sara says she was diagnosed at 13 years old after noticing more and more weakness during gymnastics.

In dealing with her form of muscular dystrophy, she graduated from Galesburg High School in 2010 and then Illinois Wesleyan University with a business degree before coming back to Galesburg and starting work at Yemm.

According to the The Drive 2A Cure website, funds raised Saturday go toward further MDA and ALS research as well as other diseases that affect “people’s ability to walk, move, smile, talk, and even breathe.”
