Report: Third of Chicago employees take home $100K or more

CHICAGO (AP) — A published report says nearly one in three City of Chicago workers made $100,000 or more last year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that’s a far higher proportion making six-figures than in state or Cook County government.

The newspaper’s analysis combined salaries, overtime and other extra pay.

The newspaper found 26 city workers made more than Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s pay of $216,000. Those employees include a police detective, two fire department ambulance commanders and two water department operating engineers.

The payments to 35,761 city employees totaled $2.93 billion in 2014. The city spent nearly $241 million of that on overtime.

The Sun-Times says the mayor’s office took months to release the payment information and only after the newspaper appealed to the Illinois attorney general’s office.
