Illinois medical marijuana dispensaries prepare to open

CHICAGO (AP) — The wait for legal medical marijuana in Illinois is nearly over.

A trade group representing medical marijuana businesses in Illinois says five dispensaries plan to sell marijuana Monday, the first day of authorized sales.

The dispensaries are in Canton, Addison, Marion, Mundelein and Quincy. Three other dispensaries have been licensed but are not planning to open for sales Monday.

Approximately 3,300 patients with Illinois-issued ID cards will be able to purchase medical cannabis.

The Medical Cannabis Alliance of Illinois says four cultivation centers delivered the first cannabis over the weekend. The first products are plant materials that patients can smoke or use as vapor.

The trade group says edibles, oils, drinks and tinctures will be available by the end of November.

Illinois is among 23 states with medical marijuana programs.
