Open house planned for new Transit Maintanence Facility and renovated Amtrak station

The public is invited to an open house and dedication ceremony next week for the newly renovated Amtrak station and new Transit Maintenance Facility.

Director of Community Development Roy Parkin says improvements to the Amtrak station, 225 South Seminary Street, include space for checking baggage, an enlarged waiting area and ticket counter for the Burlington Trailway bus line as well as redone floors, windows and restrooms.

The new Transit Maintenance Facility, 1025 Monmouth Boulevard, allows for Galesburg Transit and Galesburg Handivan vehicles to be stored and maintained indoors, a nice change from previous outdoor housing that Parkin says left buses exposed to the elements.
The Amtrak project cost over $882,000 and the Transit Maintenance Facility ran about $4.46 million.
And Parkin tells WGIL the projects didn’t cost Galesburg a dime.

“Through either IDoT or state funds or federal dollars, funded 100 percent of both projects so the city was not responsible for any dollars,” Parkin says. “So that was a big plus to be able to get those two projects completed without having to spend local dollars.”

The open houses are set for 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. November 19th at the Amtrak Station and 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Transit Maintenance Facility.
