Butts announces for 74th race

Galesburg attorney Bill Butts has announced he will run on the Democratic ticket for the 74th district seat opening up at the completion of Don Moffitt’s term.

Butts is the only Democrat to announce his candidacy and he is doing so for the third time since 1992.

On a platform of redistricting as his top priority, Butts tells WGIL he’s running to even the playing field.

“I was hoping that someone else would come forward, but no one has,” says Butts. “I’ve been talking about it for about a year, about redistricting and how important it is to have competitive districts. Low in behold here in the 74th, it’s headed for another unopposed election. I’m here to get a full airing of the issues out and to make the 74th district competitive.”

Despite Illinois’ fiscal issues keeping legislators at a stand still, Butts says he thinks there are ways to mend the impasse.

“We can compromise perhaps on the unemployment issue, compromise perhaps on some business taxes and boosting them up, perhaps some reform in the state income tax structure to raise some additional revenue.”

Butts has served on the Knox County Board, Galesburg Sanitary District and as the Vice President of the Knox County Democratic Party. He says he will now petition for signatures.
