Community Food Drive gives to FISH Food Pantry tomorrow

The Galesburg community is in need. In difficult economic times, and even in times of prosper, there are those who need a little help from time to time.

The annual WGIL Community Food Drive starts tomorrow morning and aims to help the area’s hungry.

Four UPS trucks will be stationed throughout the community from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at both Galesburg Hy-Vee locations and at the Galesburg Walmart as well as one at the Abingdon Hi-Lo.

People wanting to donate can bring non-perishable food items to those locations.

The three Galesburg trucks will go to the FISH Food Pantry and the Hi-Lo stop will go the Abingdon Food Pantry.

FISH President Lynne Devlin says over the last couple years, the food pantry has served between 17,000 and 18,000 people each year. She estimates that is about three times the number of people served about five years ago.

Devlin tell’s Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL this is a community in need.

“We think there’s not a homeless situation here in Galesburg because we don’t see them lying around the street,” Devlin says. “There is a homeless situation here.”

FISH serves exclusively food through community driven donations and with the help of volunteers. People who wish to donate perishable foods can do so at the FISH pantry at 688 Hawthorne Court where refrigeration is available.

Cash and check donations will be accepted as well as non-perishable food items during tomorrow’s food drive.
