Illinois point guard Tate has finger surgery

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois coach John Groce says point guard Jaylon Tate had surgery to repair a dislocated finger but has not said when the junior might return.

Groce said in a statement Saturday that Tate had surgery on his right little finger Friday night after suffering an open dislocation in a loss earlier that night in the opener against North Florida.

Groce did not say when Tate might be able to return to the lineup.

Illinois is thin at point guard. Groce has said Malcolm Hill will handle the position for now.

The Illini will face North Dakota State on Sunday.
