Shave for the Brave raise $50,500, announce festival plans

A night in 2014 that started over a beard, a beer and a bet has now turned into an incorporated non-profit who has raised more than $50,500 for area veterans.

Shave for the Brave made that announcement last night to a packed house at the Iron Spike Brewing Company in Galesburg.

The organization raises funds for the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities–a trip that takes veterans to Washington D.C. to view war memorials at no charge to them.

Coordinator Crystal Wilson tells WGIL, that next year, vets closer to home will directly see the funds.

“With the Honor Flight that we are sponsoring for 2016, we are actually going to focus on Knox County veterans,” says Wilson.

A number of other announcements came last night as well. Wilson says a new event is in the works.

“In hopes of the city’s approval, we are going to have our own stand alone event in June of 2016. It will be a craft beer tasting event, as well as our beard contest and our shave event. We are also a part of the Back Road Music Festival in Galva, Illinois  again in August of 2016.”

Last night’s event was dedicated to Shave for the Brave committee member Nick Kraynak, the man believed to have been killed yesterday in a car accident on I-74. Wilson says Kraynak played a big role in raising the funds.Shave-1-e1447598158599-150x150
