Galesburg attorney appointed as Ninth Judicial judge

tony VaupelThe Illinois Supreme Court announced today the appointment of Galesburg Attorney Tony W. Vaupel to serve as judge in Ninth Judicial Circuit Court.

Vaupel is filling a position left by Chief Judge James Stewart, who retired Oct. 1.

The private attorney will begin as circuit judge Dec. 7 and his appointment will continue until December 2016 when the position will be filled by election.

In a news release, Vaupel says he is thankful for the opportunity, adding he does not plan to run for the position during next year’s election.

Since 2005, Vaupel has worked with the Galesburg law firm Barash & Everett LLC, where he made partner in 2012.

Prior to that, he worked as a Knox County assistant public defender, as attorney at Boucher & Enright and as Fulton County Assistant State’s Attorney.

The circuit judge position is the second of two that had to be filled in light of retiring judges. The first was filled by twice-retired Judge Stephen Mathers, who was assigned to the position left by retiring Circuit Judge Steven R. Bordner.

Vaupel is a graduate of Galesburg High School, Carl Sandburg College and Knox College. He earned his law degree in 2001 from Ohio Northern University Claude Pettit College of Law.
