Monmouth-Roseville considers 14 percent tax levy increase

In a move Monmouth-Roseville Superintendent Ed Fletcher says would be a “significant increase” from years past, District 238 will move forward with a proposed 14 percent tax levy increase.

School board members tentatively approved that levy last week, ahead of final approval coming next month.

For homeowners in the district, the levy increase would spell out quite the tax hike. Under the option chosen, homeowners of a $45,000 home would see a tax increase of roughly $26 per month or $316 per year.

The district is operating with a $180,000 deficit this year, but Fletcher tells WGIL, the increase stems from uncertainties.

“The reason for it is the possibility of tax caps and the possibility of whatever your aggregate base and debt service base was this year–if this was the base year of the property tax cap, the board is very concerned with the inability to raise revenue in the future,” says Fletcher. “For us, our reliance on general state aid makes this really our only way to raise additional revenue.”

Increases over 4.99 percent are required to go through a Truth in Taxation hearing before a final decision is made. District 238 will hold their hearing December 8th at 5:45 p.m.
