Galesburg Council amends landscape regulations

Galesburg City Council members officially did away with a long list of landscape regulations last night that had been suspended due to their strictness.

Aldermen voted 7-0 in favor of that measure, however, the solution is only temporary.

Council will likely see a proposal again in February. City Manager Todd Thompson tells WGIL, that the proposal will deal with buffering.

“We’ll primarily focus on buffering around the perimeter of the property, especially if it relates to separating instances where you have dissimilar uses, perhaps a residential and a commercial,”says Thompson. “That’s going to be the focus, is trying to bring back some buffering requirements that are easy to understand and easy for development to implement.”

The proposal in place until next year will allow businesses and those looking to build to only be required to submit rough landscape sketches, in lieu of turning in drafts from a professional.

Council also decided last night to go ahead with various solutions in response to downtown parking complaints.

Among those solutions include installing two hour parking signs on “highly congested” parts of main street. Though the signs will go up, they will not be readily enforced.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says other solutions include upgrading free parking signs in designated lots.
