Beautification on East Main nears completion

Roadways have been paved, the medians have been landscaped.

The city is now just waiting for decorative street lights to finish being manufactured before the remodeling of the East Main street entrance to town is complete.

The bidding process began in July for the $1.46 million dollar project that is exclusively being funded by TIF.

City Engineer Wayne Carl told WGIL that other than waiting on the lights the project is on schedule and should be completed by the new year.

“Our contractor had 35 working days, I think he’s used 27 or 28 so far,” says Carl. “Now the rain will probably set him back a little, but he;s got all of the fencing done and a lot of the landscaping done and all of the irrigation. All the difficult weather related items are almost done.”

Another part of the East Main redressing was the removal of chain link fence in favor of decorative black fencing including stone pillars.

Architects designed the pillars in the same style as the Moffitt and Bickerdyke overpasses. A stone gateway has also been built which eventually will hold a Galesburg sign that will be lit at night.

The redesign has been a long awaited project.

Carl said over the years it was a recurring suggestion on what the city could do to improve the community.
